Cat Update
It was a very sad weekend. We said goodbye
to Jake. He was losing weight even though
we had a feeding tube in and he was being
fed high calorie vitamin packed food. He
was vomiting, he was nauseous. It was time.
I promise the cats that we will love them and
care for them the best we can and then when
the time comes, we will love them enough to
say goodbye. I held him in my arms, sobbing
as he left this earth. You aren’t supposed to
have favorites, but he was one of mine.
He was such a sweet special boy and will be
so very missed by us and the other cats.

Holly
Holly also has kidney disease. Her blood work from 6 months ago
and last week do not show that it has gotten worse. She is still eating
and doing reasonably well. She does not need fluids yet. She is
having a much needed dental Wednesday, she has a broken tooth. (
have no clue how she did that)
KIDNEY DISEASE IN CATS
Today’s article is about kidney disease in cats. This condition is
the leading cause of death in domestic cats and is very common
in older cats.
We need to understand how the kidneys work. The kidneys are
made up of thousands of little funnel shaped tubes called
nephrons. Their job is to filter and reabsorb fluids.
A young healthy cat has so many nephrons available that they
are held in reserve. As they get older or in case of kidney
damage some nephrons stop working and then the reserve
nephrons start working. When there are no more reserve
nephrons, the signs of chronic kidney disease will appear.
When 2/3 of the nephrons are lost, the kidneys will no longer
be able to conserve water and they will pass more diluted
urine. By the time the creatinine levels are elevated on a
cat’s bloodwork, 75% of nephrons in both kidneys are gone.
There are so many causes, many we can not control and often
the exact cause can not be identified. FIV and FELV, Diabetes,
Hypertension are on the list. This is why I beg you to insist that
your vets check your cats for hypertension. Make sure you get full
blood work on your cats. For many, kidney disease is the outcome
from the under lying disease.
Some symptoms can look like other things, Increased thirst
and urination, leaking urine, vomiting, diarrhea, lack of
appetite, weight loss, anemia, overall body weakness.
Nutrition is important. I can’t over come the damage done to the cats
by the foods they were fed before they came to me but I can
control what they eat once they get here. There is lots of arguments
and disagreements about pet food. We feed grain free, no bi-products
no dyes. We feed both wet and dry. We have some that will not
touch wet. We do encourage them to eat wet to give them
more liquid, cats often do not drink enough water.
After doing some more serious reading and research that is

We are going to start trying to transition our cats to all
wet food. I know there will be those of you that will say
your cats ate nothing but dry and lived to 20 and that is ok :)
We all have to do what we feel is right for us and our families :)

Wendy I fully expected to be taking to the vet to say goodbye
to today and she has surprised me. She is FELV+ and also
has kidney disease. She has been on daily fluids for many months.
I gave her an appetite stimulate, and she surprised me and started
eating and put back on a few ounces. She still does not have the
look or behavior of someone in a hurry to leave us. She has
become so much more affectionate. (She has always been friendly
but even more so now)

There are 6 cats sitting on the top 2 levels of a large
climber. There is a bird that has gotten inside under
the roof area of the patio. As the bird flies back and
forth all the cats heads are turning in unison. They may
be blind but they sure know where that bird is :)
Carrot
Carrot had his surgery and is doing well. He will get
his stitches out next week.
