Cat Updates

We received Nicky’s necropsy back. It was dry FIP. I have done lots of research because I am confused of how he could be negative for the corona virus but have FIP. FIP is caused by a mutation of the corona virus. If you send out for a PCR test for the corona virus it detects minute amounts of the virus. In advanced clinical cases, the virus antibodies may be bound into complexes that are not detected by the laboratory test, producing a false negative result. Therefore a negative test in the presence of advanced signs does not rule out the diagnosis of FIP. He is missed, he was a funny little fellow.

Snicker

Last Saturday I did the race Snicker to Raleigh trip again. Traffic was horrible, took over 2 hours to get there!! He had lost a couple of ounces (which under normal circumstances is not a big deal) but most of all I was not happy with his respiratory rate. Normal for a cat is 20-30 I watched him and counted several times and was getting high 30’s low 40’s each time. Although his lung sounds were clear bi-laterally, no wheezing, rales or bronchi (sorry, the paramedic in me coming out) He just was not acting like normal Snicker (in vet talk he was ADR, they actually know what that means if you say that to your vet :), it means, Aint’ doing right) Better safe than sorry. I made the drive. They took x-rays, his lungs look better (as many antibiotics as he is getting I would sure hope so) they also noted a small infection starting around his feeding tube. They took a sample of the discharge to see what will grow. Got the results late yesterday and have started him on yet another antibiotic. Poor Snicker. He is such a champ. Two days later his neck all around the feeding tube had erupted with horrible sores! Another call to Raleigh, they agreed with me, pull the tube and have the local vet take a look at it. So a fast trip to our local vet. They flushed it and said keep antibiotic creme on it. It must itch Snicker really badly because he is scratching at it and it looks pretty horrible. I have been cleaning it twice a day and putting creme and fresh bandages on it. The feeding tube cover is keeping him from clawing it open. I would rather let it stay uncovered but it needs to heal more before we do that. Now that we know what antibiotic will fix it we hope it will heal up quickly.

Autumn is hanging in there. She is going more sniffy, nasally sounding. Her lung sounds are clear. I suspect the tumor has gotten larger. The sniffy sounds are what made us take her to the vet the first time because it did not clear up after a week of antibiotics. She is eating but starting to lose weight an ounce here and there. she is stilling walking the wheel :)

Casey’s blood work is normal. She is having another Chest X-ray next week. She is eating on her own, holding her weight BUT has not regained as much weight as I would like to see. She is still on antibiotics and vitamins.
