Asked by Salee in NC Dear Snicker:  Why are there so many blind cats? Dear Salee,  sadly the majority are from neglect by  their first owners. The cats got an upper respiratory infection that progressed to an eye infection, that cost them their sight,  That is what happened to me. Worse, I was living outside as a stray. Somehow I ended up at animal control. Lucky for me, they called BCR instead of automatically euthanizing me. (In NC the law says an animal may be automatically killed if sick, injured or blind) How crazy is that!   Also, your pet family members may become blind from illness such as  becoming hyperthyroid, hypertension, diabetes, or even worms.  They can also be born blind, or have a genetic disease or cataracts. If your pet has a “cold” please take them to the vet.  If my first owners had bothered, I might not be blind.
If there is something you would like to know about Blind Cat Rescue or cats or anything elase, please send an email to dearsnicker@gmail.com  Your question may be featured on Facebook and the newsletter.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Cats
Irritable Bowell Syndrome is one of the most common causes of digestive problems in cats. We have several cats that struggle with this.
It is usually identified by frequent bouts of diarrhea, vomiting, upset stomach and weight loss. First stop should be to your vet.  They will run different tests and make sure they take a full through history.  Treatment is often different for each cat and usually includes a treatment with medications and dietary adjustments. Your vet may include corticosteroids. ours uses Prednisolone.  It is a powerful anti-inflammatory medication. BUT administer it exactly as your vet tells you!  Usually they start with a higher dose than taper off over time.  Steroids can cause diabetes, it is a strong contribution to Domino becoming diabetic.  Make sure the cat is being carefully monitored. You give the correct dose at the  right time.  If you have a hard time pilling your cat ask your vet about having it compounded in liquid.  They can add flavors to make it more palatable. They may also have you try prescription antibiotics.  Metronidazole is very common.  It is also absolutely awful tasting.  Ask your vet if they can have it compounded for you into tiny tabs.  Wedgewood is a compounder that some vets use that make it into tiny tablets. Very easy to give without the horrible taste. Talk to your vet about what kind of food you should feed your cat.  Our vet had us change to a hypoallergenic diet.  A protein source that your cat has not eaten before. Rabbit, venison, duck or kangaroo for example. Amazon has several, so does chewy.com Here is a link to the rabbit For wet we are using   Rabbit Stevie says the BUFFALO is great! He also likes the DUCK all of the cats HATE the venisons we have tried. We are going to try a few cans of the kangaroo Right now Stevie is regaining weight and has not had diarrhea on the rabbit & buffalo. For you that wrote to me earlier about IBD with your cats, Thank you for sharing so much info with me!  There is a group on Facebook for kitties with IDB, HERE is the link Also talk to your vet about probiotics. Solid Gold, Udo’s Choice, The flora Co are all good Some feel that pumpkin will help (if you can get the cat to eat it)

Meet Paul
Big Paul came to us in 2006 from a hoarder with his 2 sisters. He was a tiny little guy with a horrible upper respiratory and eye infection.  One of his sisters passed away the next day.  His other sister became my daughters cat and moved out when she moved away from home. He is a big cat, 18+ pounds.  If you sit down on the floor he will be the first one to jump in your lap.
