Meet Boots
Boots came to us in 2011 as soon as our  new building opened. Boots was living as a stray and was taken in by someone that felt she could not keep him because he test FIV+ Boots later test FIV/FELV+ Boots is a very friendly loving fellow.  Sadly he is struggling with his health.  He has intestinal cancer.  Lymphoma is a prevalent for of cancer in cats.  Intestinal lymphoma in the small intestine is the most common form of the disease. Some symptoms of gastrointestinal lymphoma are vomiting and diarrhea.  Sometimes it is just a refusal to eat and weight loss.  If your cat is acting ill or lethargic for any period of time, a trip to the vet is needed. How will your vet diagnose it?  Our vet did full blood work, x-rays, ultrasound.  He does not have a tumor, he has changes in his GI symptom that are consistent with lymphoma. Treatment?  You have to consider many factors.  Where is the cancer, is it a tumor?  What will the quality of your pets life be? How will your cat handle the trips to the vet and treatments. Is your cat leukemia positive? (that will affect the out come)  Has he cancer spread? Can you afford the treatment? They can do surgery, radiation, chemo or treat with steroids. You need to sit down and really have a conversation with a pet oncologist. What causes so much cancer in cats?  They truly do not know. We have treated with chemo several cats and not had a positive outcome for any of them.  We only bought them some time.  I am all about quality of life.  Because of that, we are treating with steroids and pain meds if he needs them. .  Boots gets to stay home, not having car long rides to the vet that upset him, and nothing very invasive.  We will keep him comfortable for the time he has and love on him.  When there is no more quality of life, we will set him free. This is a very personal decision and only You can decide what is the right decision for you and your pet.

Cat Updates
Stevie - We are going to Raleigh for tests.  He is still losing weight.  All blood tests, X-rays and ultrasound are not giving us the answer of why. He is a triad cat (gut issues)  I will not be surprised to have it come back as cancer.  He is eating well and does not appear to be in any pain.
Manxi has pancreatitis.  She is home with a feeding tube and pain meds. She is eating on her own and recovering
A picture of Meadow, a pretty black kitty :)
Sweet Meadow (felv/fiv+) has been struggling with her health.  She was hospitalized for 5 days running a very high fever,  105-106!   Leukemia is a type of cancer that is commonly known to cause fevers.  Did you know that? Fevers related to cancer are persistent, meaning they last longer than three days and can be low- or high-grade. They can be accompanied by other symptoms or occur without other symptoms.  If you suspect your cat may be sick,  take their temperature.  Normal rectal temps for an adult cat is 100-102.5F.   Take them to your vet if they are running a fever. She is home on a feeding tube also,  She is now eating on her own.  We will keep the feeding tube for another week to make sure she has recovered completely.
