Meet Mack

Sweet Mack is an FIV+ cat. He has recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroid. Our cats are given full check ups including blood work and the blood work showed it to us before he has even become symptomatic. Had we not caught it, he would have started losing weight and possibly become blind. If you have a senior cat (Mack is approx 10) always alway always have a full senior blood panel done every year when they go for their check up and make sure they include a T-4 test. Catching it early will help Mack from having extra stress put on his heart, kidneys, and other organs. Hyperthyroidism results from an over production of thyroid hormones (mainly T-4, that is why you get the T-4 test) from a tumor in the thyroid gland. This tumor 97% of all cases is a benign tumor. There are several ways to treat it. You can have radioactive iodine treatment (We did this with Keller) Medication (which is very inexpensive and we did for years with Keller first) The problem with the medication is getting the levels correct and sometimes the cat will stop eating or the levels can become toxic. That is what happened with Keller and thus having the radioactive treatment. Or surgery. With Mack we are going to go the for the radiation treatment, it is considered the gold standard. Some symptoms are weight loss even though they have a good appetite, heart disease, hair coat/skin/nail abnormalities, nighttime yowling/restlessness/confusion/behavior changes increased drinking and urination. CAT Updates Felix’s test for fungus was negative. Licorice has not had eye surgery yet, he has a slight upper respiratory infection so we are going to wait for 2 weeks to remove his eye. Jake goes back to Raleigh on 2/24 for his endoscope Carrot is also going to Raleigh to see the eye doctor, he has had 3 surgery’s on his eye and is still having issues. Enough is enough, we are going to the ophthalmologist.

Last year we spent over $100,000 on the cats just for medical care. If they need to go to a specialist, they go. :)
