Why do cats become blind?
Lots or reasons. But the number One reason we have found is by an untreated upper respiratory infection with an eye infection. A box of antibiotics would have saved the sight of the majority of the cats in our care. By far, viruses are the most common cause of upper respiratory infections in cats. Feline calicivirus and feline herpes virus account for 80-90% of all contagious upper respiratory problems. Cats often develop bacterial infections secondary to these common viral infections.
Had Charity been treated by a vet she may not have become blind. General Symptoms of Upper Respiratory Infections: Symptoms differ depending on the cause & location of the infection, but some of the common clinical signs are: * Sneezing * Congestion * Runny nose * Cough * Clear to color nasal discharge * Gaggin, drooling * Fever * Loss or decreased appetite * Nasal and oral ulcers * Squinting or rubbing eyes. If your cat is showing any signs of an upper respiratory infection, Please take them to the vet. How to prevent your cat from getting an upper respiratory infection? * Keep your cat indoors to minimize the risk of exposure to infected animals. * Keep your cat up to date on vaccines as recommended by your vet. * Regular exams and preventive care can catch and treat problems early. A cat’s best defense is a healthy immune system. Cat Updates

Greta’s Story
Greta came to us in 2007 from Animal Control in SC. She was a very sick kitten and blind kitten with an upper respiratory infection. Antibiotics in time would have saved her sight. She was very lucky that she was very sweet and one of the staff members took her home to foster her to try to find a place for her to go. She was at the top of the euthanasia list.
Having just arrived sick from the pound.
She is a love bug :)
