Meet Tom

Tom Thanks you for helping give him a future. He is a very sweet FELV+ kitty that was rescued off the streets after being badly injured by another animal.  The people that found him had  a medical crisis going in their lives and could not keep him.  They were very desperate for a place for him to go.  They were going to euthanize  him if they couldn’t find a place that could help him. This is a very sweet kitty.  His injuries appear the he was on his back fighting the animal with his legs.  He has multiple bite wounds, his ACL in both legs are torn & he will need surgery on both knees.  You can see he is in pain when he walks (he is on pain medicine).  He does more laying than walking which at this point is what his leg needs.   He is also very thin.  He has a great appetite and is gaining much needed weight.  He will have surgery as soon as the vets are comfortable that he is strong enough to go under anesthesia.  He thanks you for your support that gave us the ability to save his life..

Meet Atticus

Atticus is a big friendly FELV+ that came to us from a rescue that was helping him after he was found as a stray.  Most small rescues do not have  enough foster homes for healthy adoptable cats. They needed a place for him to go quickly.  Sadly we had the space for him.  When we lose one it opens a space to save one.

RIP Meadow

If you are a regular  reader you know that Meadow has been struggling with her health.  Sadly she lost her battle to intestinal cancer.  She was such a sweet loving soul and is very missed.

Big Bob

Bob is still struggling with his health.  He has been hospitalized for a few days almost every week for the last month with a high fever (105+)   We finally  (we hope) got the right test done and he shows that he is positive for Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum.  Believe me, I had to Google this one. In plain English, it is a mean bacteria that is a cause of Feline Infectious Anemia.  Symptoms include anemia (check), lethargy (check,) fever (check) anorexia (check)  The good thing is it is treatable.  He is on a new medication and we hope he will pull through this health crisis.  If your cat is having these kind of symptoms, ask your vet to  run a fever of unknown origin test.  We have been told this is caused by fleas and can sit dormant.  We have zero fleas and our cats are flea treated monthly but exposure to fleas from before he arrived could be where he got it from. We are starting a  BOOK BUDDIES Program!

We are hoping to get lots of children to come read to the cats this summer.  This will give the children an opportunity to learn about cats and compassion and the cats will get extra attention. WIN WIN!  If you are in our local area,  please bring your kids out to read to the cats. IF you have some children’s books that you do not have a need for,  we would love to have them.

The Con Artist By Uncle Bear    As she stopped and looked in the window, I waited. Sitting on my porch, I was aware of her and wondered what she might do. Would she pass by ignoring my presence, smile, scowl or blast away with both barrels? I was soon to find out.    Watching the woman mount the stairs and march over to where I was seated, I waited for the inevitable. “Is that your cat?” She demanded. “Yes, ma’am,” I replied. At that point she let me have it with both theoretical barrels. “You ought to be ashamed of yourself! That poor feline looks undernourished, and the pathetic look on its face is just heartbreaking. I’ve got a good mind to….”        Interrupting her I asked, “Ma’am, may I presume you’re a cat fancier?” Ready to grab her cellphone and have me hauled away to wherever cat abusers are kept, she crisply replied, “Yes, I am!” Then I said, “Please allow me to ask you three questions. Take your time in answering all three and then make your decision as to my fate and possible punishment.”    “Question number one. As you were observing my cat, Miss Karol, did she somehow appear to be making herself smaller?” Pondering my question briefly, my porch intruder replied, “Come to think of it, she did act as if she were. I’ve watched my own kitties do the same thing.”    “Question number two. Again, observing, Miss Karol, in your mind’s eye, did it seem as if somehow she was contorting her face to increase its look of sadness and neglect?” After a thoughtful minute, the lady said, “Yes,”    “And finally question number three. As you turned from the window, to berate me on my mistreatment of my kitty, did you see even the hint of a smile cross her face?”    My visitor realizing she had been conned by a conniving cat, broke into a huge smile and began apologizing profusely. “Oh, sir, I’m so sorry. It seems your kitty likes playing tricks on you. Is there anything I can do to make up for my rude conduct?’    “Do you do any baking?” I asked.    “Why, yes.” was her reply.    “Well, ma’am, I’m old widower, and it’s been a long time since I’ve tasted a piece of homemade pie.”      “What’s your favorite? Perhaps I can make one and drop it off next Saturday.”    “I like all kinds, but I’m partial to apple, cherry, and peach. Truthfully, I’ll gladly devour any kind given to me.”    Bidding me farewell, with the understanding she would return the following Saturday, pie in hand, the lady departed.    Waiting a few minutes after her exit, I walked in the house and addressed Miss Karol: “Sweetheart, you did an admirable performance, and I’m proud of you. You‘ll find extra tuna in your dish tonight. And if a pie is delivered next Saturday, you can expect a new toy Sunday morning.”

Meet A Supporter - Dan

I found BCR by accident when looking for advice to care for my dying cat Fritz, that was around February 2014. It was around 6 months after learning and researching into BCR that I made my 1st visit for the August 2014 Open House. I was already working with 2 other charities at the time, but after all the research, I found BCR to be “Setting the Bar” for cat care!!! This  IS the cleanest, healthiest and BEST run organization I have EVER come across. BCR was something I felt that I NEEDED and WANTED to be a part of. The calling was SO strong that I was willing to take a 15 hour bus ride, each way, and was going to walk the 10-15 miles from Fayetteville to St. Pauls. I didn't have to walk :) The first cat I saw was Popcorn on Ustream. To be honest, I freaked out :( I didn't know anything about her and was very uninformed about  blind cats and such... in time I learned that she was not only Ok but was also very happy. The first cat I met was “Mack”, simply because he’s a lobby cat. He came right up to me for some pets. My first impression of BCR was very surreal. It was like a dream I never  wanted to wake up from. My whole visit was outstanding. The most  enjoyable part of visiting BCR was being able to get my hands dirty by helping clean and doing whatever needed to be done for the cats. I REALLY wanted to do MORE than voting and donating. Being swarmed  by the cats was  also awesome! I like spending extra time with the “special kitties” and the cats in quarantine. Some people  are not too fond of the spray room so I spend extra time  with them. I didn’t want to leave and I’m NOT ashamed  to say that I shed tears on my way home. I wanted to  take them ALL home with me. I've been asked "What is your favorite special moment" ? I would be hard  pressed to pick one :) There are SO  many from greeting new cats to BCR,  Alana getting the "Eagle Rare" Award, meeting new people staying at the Guest House to quite times on the GH patio just soaking up the peace and tranquility. I would like to take a moment to THANK everyone that  votes, donates, clicks, volunteers, E-Bay sellers/buyers,  walkers/runners using the  resQwalk app and all the  staff that keep this excellent organization  running. I  would like to send a SPECIAL thanks to Alana for starting  this Charity and the sacrifices she continues to make for these cats. BCR is not just a charity to me. BCR is a place to find advice, support,  information and tons of love when you NEED it the most. BCR was a huge  part of my recovery from losing my Fritz kitty. You  see, Fritz was my  mom’s cat till she passed so it hit me especially hard when he died in my arms. It was  like losing my mom all over again. It would have been  SO much harder on me without the love and support I found here at BCR  and on BCR Chat !!! I truly LOVE this place and am looking forward to my return in August 2016 :) THANK YOU EVERYONE for making this place what it is. Peace, Love & happiness to all, Love Dan
